Beskrivelse:

The process of European integration will require journalists to knowledgeably and sensitively report on European countries - even more so in the years ahead of us. The European Journalism Fellowship Program aims at preparing media professionals for this increasingly difficult task. Every year, first-rate journalists from Eastern and Western Europe are provided with the possibility to study at the Berlin universities for a maximum of two semesters.

A “sabbatical”
Participants will thus receive a “sabbatical” in the middle of their professional lifes - a chance to acquire, deepen, and refresh knowledge. In particular, they will have the rare opportunity to research in-depth and explore the broader contexts of the field of journalism in which they work, whether it be politics, economics, science, or culture. During their year at the European Journalism Fellowship Program, journalistic investigation will merge with scholarly inquiry.

Fellows of the European Journalism Fellowship Program will also have the chance to get to know Germany and its future capital Berlin. Moreover, they will be able to experience a part of Europe previously rendered inaccessible to most of them by the Iron Curtain. German participants are encouraged to “europeanize” their points of view. Additional fellows from the United States will further stimulate the discussion.

Lectures and seminars from three universities in Berlin:
Participants are encouraged to choose from the full range of lectures and seminars offered by the three universities in Berlin:

  • Freie Universität Berlin, founded in the western part of Berlin after World War II, covers the full spectrum of the humanities and sciences
  • Technische Universität Berlin specializes in technology and engineering
  • Humboldt-Universität Berlin, the traditional university in Berlin before World War II, is located in the eastern part of Berlin, and has been completely re-organized after 1990. It offers humanities and science.
Foreign Students
Students have to be fluent in German and go through the admission test.

Freie Universität Berlin
The European Journalism Fellowship Program is part of the Journalisten-Kolleg at the Freie Universität Berlin. The Journalisten-Kolleg offers two other programs dedicated to enhance journalistic mid-career training:
  • The Journalisten-Weiterbildung, a mid-career program for German journalists who remain on the job while working four years towards their degree
  • The program Journalists from Russia, which from 1999 on will give young Russian journalists the chance to study and work in Berlin for a period of three months.
