Beskrivelse:

Background
CENJOR was created by a protocol signed in 1986 by the National Union of Journalists, by newspaper publisher associations and by government departments that oversee both the state owned media and professional training. The centre started functioning in 1987.

The Goal
CENJOR's goals include to assist in improving the quality of local, regional and national journalism, as well as entrepreneurial activities connected with the mass media. Mainly, CENJOR provides development and qualification to professionals and regular media contributors, encourages adaptation to new communication areas and technologies and facilitates the acquisition of new professional competencies.

Trainers and Specialists
CENJOR has an extensive team of external trainers and lecturers. They are journalists (from newspapers, radio, television and news agencies) photographers, engineers (sound and image) and technicians (computers and computer aided news graphics). They are all fully qualified instructors with extensive professional experience in their respective fields.

Portuguese speaking countries
CENJOR has developed several projects and training sessions for journalists and media company staff in Portuguese speaking African countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and S. Tome e Principe. These training actions originate from a variety of approaches by the countries concerned: They can either state their requirements directly to CENJOR or they can contact the Portuguese agencies in charge of aid within the framework of agreements that each country has signed with Portugal. Sometimes contact is made through international aid institutions. These courses take place both in Lisbon and Africa.

Activities
Scope of activities: CENJOR's professional journalism training covers newspapers, photojournalism, radio, television, computers, information technologies and some management areas of media companies. The duration of the courses varies from extended (about 1,500 hours, including a period of apprenticeship at the various media) to medium (150 to 600 hours) and short (30 to 60 hours).

The goals are the improvement of professional techniques (writing for the media, reporting, etc.), specialization in specific areas (environment, economy, etc.) and the widening of competencies for journalists and regular contributors to newspapers, news agencies, radio and television (television techniques for radio journalists, photography for newspapers reporters, digital image handling, computer graphics, etc.).

Workshops and courses
Through agreements with universities, as well as direct enrolment by students in their last year and by those who have just graduated, CENJOR regularly organizes professionally-oriented newspaper, radio and television workshops. The workshops are intended to be a practical supplement to theoretical learning. The medium duration workshops (about 200 hours) improve the professional integration of would-be journalists, both newly started and university students. CENJOR´s varied activities include short duration courses for secondary education teachers who lead communication projects in their schools. Medium duration courses are also provided to professionals at public and private entities who either work in communication departments or deal with the press.

Qualifications
Academic level required: Depends on the formation type. Generally students must be journalists or attend (or have attended) university.

Fees/ tuition
Fees: Depends on the formation type. Usually journalists pay about 15,000 PTE (USD$100) and other students pay about 60,000 PTE (USD$400), but they receive a daily lunch allowance of 600 PTE (USD$4). Scholarships are available during the three months at the General Journalism Training Course: About 120,000 PTE (USD$800).
