CFJE opened officially on March 18th 1999 and is the only centre of its kind in Denmark. Our main objective is to play a key role in the development of a system of lifelong learning for journalists and other professional media workers. We do this by developing new forms of further education and by increasing the levels of knowledge and insight into journalism and editorial processes through research and analysis

As a profession, journalism is currently experiencing many challenges. Some flow from technological developments and new types of media which change many day-to-day work routines for journalists. Others come from new ways of organising journalistic work such as the growing trend towards media convergence. Still other challenges come from the complex interdependence between journalism and society: New actors such as media advisors are growing in numbers, and the audiences have new expectations of the role of their media.

Recognising the need for Danish journalists to be able to address these and many other issues in a coherent manner led the Danish government to set up a special commission in 1994 to review the area of further education for professional journalists. In its final report, the Media Commission recommended the setting up of a Centre for Journalism and Further Education and charged it with a number of key tasks:

  • to develop and implement a range of courses, training programmes and further education for professional journalists
  • to disseminate information to journalists about opportunities for professional development and further education in Denmark and abroad
  • to advise individual journalists on training needs
  • to support and develop national and international networks between institutions and organisations in the area of professional development for journalists
  • to contribute to development projects and in-house training programmes in the media industry
  • to publish research, analyses and teaching materials in the area of journalism
  • to develop an online database about journalism and editorial processes
  • to facilitate an experimental workshop for new types of media
Organisationally, the centre is an independent unit of the Danish School of Journalism which is situated in Aarhus – the second city in Denmark. The centre is financed by a grant from the Danish government supplemented by course and consultancy fees.

The centre currently employs 12 members of staff, the majority of whom have extensive journalistic and/or academic experience.

This website is an important tool for reaching our target groups. It contains a searchable database with opportunities for further education in Denmark and abroad and a multimedia database with information about journalism and editorial processes. The main language of the website is Danish but we will be more than happy to answer any queries you might have about the centre and our activities in English if you ring us or contact us via e-mail.
